/div>         A respectable silence for the national anthem of Mauritius, which has been led by Aayush Mungur and supported by other children. The highlight of the evening was the Mauritian Achievement Awards ceremony with interlude acts of Bhojpuri; Indian; Sega and music followed by a banqueting dinner celebrating the best of Mauritian/Indian cuisine. The event was sponsored by Gynch Shaw Maurice & Co – a Certified Chartered Accountancy Firm. The Chairman of SPELmedia (UK), Mr. Gyanchand Sunil Mungur, FCCA, takes great pride in this year’s celebration, as he puts it: “The 12th of March not only marks an important date in the Mauritian calendar but also has a direct impact on to the lives of its citizens. It is seen as a historical day because it is on this particular day that Mauritius gained its independence – Freedom. It was like turning 18 on the 12th March 1968, a step towards adulthood, where one takes control of his/her own management, decision making and work within the remit of his planned budgets.” Mr. Mungur added: “12th of March is always a great moment for all to see the Mauritian flag hailing majestically higher than ever in the clear blue sky with a constant reminder of how Mauritius has fully benefited from its Post-Independence, surpassed the infancy stage of economic growth and embarked into a more sustainable growth path. It is only four decades since Mauritius achieved its independence but despite being a young nation, through firm economic policies, stable economic growth and democratic legislation Mauritius has developed from a low-income, agriculturally based economy to a middle-income diversified economy with growing industrial, financial and the tourist sectors economy has increasingly grown to be a vibrant economy.” He boasted: “Mauritius is seen as one of the most successful and competitive economies in Africa.” Mr. Mungur reiterated: “Mauritius is seen as a land of opportunities by many with real economic growth. We are proud as a nation for what we have achieved in such a short space of time, we acknowledge our ancestral cultural heritage, their aims, their visions for their children to enjoy a healthier life. This is why we hold this special celebration to pay tribute to all those directly or indirectly involved in the success of our economic developments. It is my wish that Mauritius becomes a model in the African nations, and possibly in the world, in terms of political stability, democracy, economic prosperity and a peaceful nation.” Mr. Sunil Mungur touched upon the importance of the Achievers Awards (UK): “The aimsbehind is to award outstanding personalities within the Mauritian community for their positive contributions to the British society and Mauritius in the fields of Arts, Culture, Entertainment, Social Work, and Business.” Mr. Sashi Sohodeb reiterating the importance of the event said: “There is no doubt the Mauritian community has made a significant contribution to the British economy and to its rich cultural diversity; they have consistently continued to scale the pinnacles of success and today occupy positions of authority and influence. The achievements of the Mauritian women must not be ignored either. They are at the forefront of this success story. Per se business, media, arts, culture and community services now boast of Mauritian achievers at the highest level. It is against this background that the SPELmedia salutes individuals who are singularly responsible for bringing the Mauritian community to the centre stage of British life. Exceptional and exemplary achievements that are truly inspirational. SPELmedia continues to proudly play its part in recording the community’s consistent efforts to maintain and enhance its position within the British society. We have a vibrant Mauritian Community in Britain with various talents. This year’s competition is fierce and we hope next year will be even more challenging.” The Mauritian Achievers Awards (UK) is divided into various categories. The Business section is sub-divided into four categories: Professional; Health & care Services; Travel & Freight Services and Restaurant and Catering Services; Social & Cultural Category; Artist and Entertainment; General; Special and Life Time Achievements. The proud winner of the Professional Category in the past three years, Mr. Bushan Deepchand, of Lambeth Solicitors in Brixton, London, said: “This is a unique charity event which honours Mauritian Achievers for their outstanding achievements. All the nominees are winners. We need to have events like this. It brings the Mauritian Community together. I am looking forward to this exciting event.” Mr. Jean M.
