World Press Freedom Day : Homage to these front liners, the journalists

On this 3rd of May, World Press Freedom Day, let us pay homage to these front liners, the journalists of the printed press, the free radios, TV and other audiovisual and social media who have through this period of confinement continued to provide the population with news, data and analysis of events. Thank you for this magnificent effort!

Declaration of Windhoek

The Windhoek Declaration of 3rd of May 1991 at the end of a UNESCO seminar on “Promoting an Independent and Pluralistic African Press” in Windhoek, Namibia adopted this World Press Freedom Day.  The document calls for free, independent, pluralistic media worldwide, characterizing free press as essential to democracy and as a fundamental human right.

It supports Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states:   “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”
