Alchemia Group: Siblings rocking the floor

Two siblings are on their way to conquer the world with their music. Summer and Yahska are two well known artists, not so much in Mauritius, but across the world. They have featured in many international newspapers and magazines. News On Sunday met these two music sensations to learn about themselves and their passion for music. In 2014, the siblings formed the Electro Mystic Duo Alchemia. The sister Summer is the lead vocal while the brother Yahska is on vocals, synchronisation, djembe, drums and guitar. The name Alchemia has been taken from alchemy. In the same spirit, Alchemia want to create a perfect blend of vibes and sounds to be an elixir to listeners’ ears. Their début album Mandala was produced by Székely Records and released via Universal Music in June 2015. Their single Warrior of Light was remixed by world famous DJ Mikey Gallagher from Ministry of Sound and Hed Kandi. On 15 April 2016, they released their new mind-blowing single Tokyo Haze. Music has always been a huge part of their lives. “I started singing when I was six while my brother started playing the tabla at the age of four. We never really thought of making a career out of it,” Summer shares. However, things change when Summer suffered from a head injury which caused some hindrances in her life. “What really triggered this whole musical adventure was the fact that last year I suffered a linear head fracture. My entire life grounded to a halt. I could not move and could barely do anything. I guess words will never be enough to describe the excruciating pain. This life changing event was a humbling experience to realise the frailty of one’s life,” she recalls. Summer further adds that: “All I could do was rest and observe life unveil itself at its own pace. That’s when I realised that music is everywhere; it is the very essence of our existence. If you listen closely, you will realise that your heart beats at a particular rhythm and that it is in tune to your every breath along with each and every movement of your body making your life an amazing musical symphony.” The only thing that kept Summer sane and got her going was music. “I wanted to seize this new life by living every single moment of it. I guess at a subconscious level, I had decided back then that I wanted to touch the lives of people through my music. I wanted to bring some joy, solace and hope to people through my, our music,” she avers. Once back on her feet, she asked her brother if he would be willing to join her in her venture. “I remember telling Yahska that it would be my way of thanking the universe for this second chance, this second life. being the wonderful brother that he is, he agreed on the spot. I have always had this bond with him and sincerely loved his vision of music and the world. For him, if you want to find the secrets of the universe, you need to think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration. The universe is sound and we are all connected. So, to be able to share this musical journey with him is an amazing experience, a blessing which I will always be grateful for,” she adds.

From there started a never ending adventure with music

Achieving so much in so little time, Summer explains that it is not about how big and powerful their work appears to others. It is about how many hearts they have touched and how many lives they have changed through their music. “My brother and I are so grateful for all the love and kindness being bestowed upon us. We exist through our music and our music exists through each of our listeners. So, we thank each one of them from the bottom of our hearts,” she expresses her gratitude.
