In a statement, Ms Mahvash underlined that the meeting with the Prime Minister was cordial and discussions focused on a range of issues in terms of economic development, the global challenges faced by Mauritius, and the various initiatives that have been undertaken. The purpose of the IMF staff visit, she highlighted, is to initiate discussions for the Article IV Consultations which will take place early next year. The aim is to take stock of recent economic developments and discuss policy issues so as to start discussions as well as collecting relevant information to prepare the Article IV, she added. The IMF consults annually with each member government.

Through these contacts, known as Article IV Consultations, the IMF attempts to assess each country’s economic health and to forestall future financial problems. The IMF has a dedicated department that provides training in macroeconomic analysis and policy formulation for officials of member countries.
