National Security Services launches probe on Mauritian in Daech

The police is taking the matter seriously a video was uploaded on YouTube featuring Mauritian Yogen Sundrun, who joined terrorist organisation Islamic State (Daech). In the video, Yogen talks in Creole and called upon Mauritian Muslims to join Daech. He also cited the name of PM Sir Anerood Jugnauth and former PM Navin Ramgoolam. “The state has arisen. There is one more step to take. Our ancestors did not spread Islam through the sweet words that Obama, Cameron, Jugnauth and Navin Ramgoolam are making you believe. Hand in hand, we will open other countries… We will open Mauritius. It’s time to wake up. There is no excuse not to do it ‘hijra’ [Muslim exile],” said Yogen, who took up the name Abu Shuaib Al Afriqi. “I appeal to the population to ignore my son’s message. I also apologies to those whom he mentions in the video,” said Yogen’s father after discovering the video. His father, who lives in Mauritius, was questioned by officers of the NSS on Wednesday. “They asked me for information about my family and my son,” he revealed. On Thursday morning, members of the Central CID also visited Yogen Sundrun’s father. “My son is a good boy. I don’t know what has happened to him after that. He seperated himself from us long ago… I appeal to him to get away from this because he has his parents and he is also a father to six children,” uttered the father. His family also declared that did not know if he was in Syria. Last time they heard about him, he was in England. Last time the father met Abu Shuaib Al Afriqi was three years back. Varun Moher, Yogen’s father in law, also stated that he has not received any new of his daughter Ranousha since three years. He explained that his daughter was aged 19 when she left Mauritius to study in England. That is where she met Yogen and also converted to Islam. Aged 35, and father of six daughters, Yogen Sundrun converted to Islam about ten years ago. His parents separated since he was still very young and his mother settled in England. After passing his School Certificate, Yogen took up employment in a print shop. According to information, Yogen joined Daech in England. He settled there ten years ago. The last time Yogen came to Mauritius was in 2013.
