1,200 persons to be trained in the maritime sector

The Minister of Ocean Economy, Prem Koonjoo, stated that government has made provision to increase the intake of the Mauritius Maritime Training Academy by 50 per cent to reach 1,200 trainees annually. Moreover, considering the big demand for recruitment in the shipping sector, the maritime training market has also being opened to Mauritian women and to the private sector.

He was speaking at a conference on ‘Shipping: Indispensable to the World’ was organised by WOMESA Mauritius in the context of World Maritime Day, observed on 29 September this year. Mr Koonjoo dwelt on the importance of the maritime and shipping sector for Mauritius as an island economy highly dependent on international trade.

One of the main objectives of WOMESA Mauritius is to improve women’s access to maritime training and technology, enabling them to acquire the high level of competence that the industry demands, as well as to promote their advancement to key decision making levels in the maritime sector.
